Michael Skubala targets League One title after Lincoln’s Championship promotion

Victorious Lincoln head coach Michael Skubala vowed that his side will now go for the Sky Bet League One title after clinching promotion with a 2-1 win at play-off chasing Reading.

Needing just one point to return to the second tier for the first time in 65 years, Lincoln took a 1-0 half-time lead through Ryan One’s early goal.

Reading had to wait until the second minute of stoppage time at the end before Lewis Wing crashed home a free-kick equaliser.

However, City substitute Jack Moylan grabbed the winner four minutes later, leaving Lincoln 12 points clear of second-placed Cardiff City.

“We want to win the title, the lads have said that they definitely want to win it,” Skubala said.

“It’s going to be tough, but let’s go and get that done as well.

“Every game is tough, but if we can go and put in some more good performances, we can do it.

“We’ll enjoy tonight, we’ll go out and have a beer. But we’ll be back in on Wednesday, after a day off tomorrow, and then we’ll be ready for a big game at home [Leyton Orient on Saturday].

“It’s an unbelievable feeling now. The lads have been excellent all season and to get the job done today, to get promoted on Easter Monday, just epitomises our season.

“Every game is tough at this level. You have to be ready, you have to be on it, and Reading are good team and it was an excellent goal from Lewis Wing that brought them back into it.

“Be we kept believing, that we could catch them on the counter, and that’s what happened.

“I’m not really thinking about next season yet. I’m not thinking about anything else today, I’m just enjoying this.”

Reading fell from sixth place to eighth and are now two points outside the play-offs.

“You’ve got to have a lot of humility so, first of all, congratulations to Lincoln,” Reading manager Leam Richardson said. “We wish them well.

“These scenes [the Lincoln players and fans celebrating], I’ve experienced myself before.

“But from this side of the fence, these are the scenes that you use as fuel to enable you to go on and do your things going forward.

“I thought that game was really balanced and their goals came down to two individual moments and, to be honest, errors.

“In fact, if you want a word, the two goals were a bit pathetic. From a set-play and from a duel in the middle of the pitch that we lost.

“We’ve got to improve from that and evolve with that.

“We’ve got to look at the positives. We’ve still got 12 points left to play for.

“We’ll hurt for the next 24-48 hours, absolutely, but we’ve still got to look forward.”
